Treating Hamstring Muscle Strain

Hamstring strains can be frustrating to live with, especially if you frequently participate in sports, and healing can take a long time because it's difficult to give your leg the rest it needs. Re-injury is common but it prolongs recovery and may also lead to permanent damage and other conditions.

Treating your hamstring strain correctly is essential to getting rid of your pain and restoring function to your upper thigh. Proper treatment will get you back to regular activities sooner, stop your pain, and reduce the risk of future re-injury.

To restore strength and range of motion in your hamstrings, treatment should focus on preventing scar tissue formation and muscle atrophy (shrinkage and weakening of the muscle). This requires rest and the appropriate treatment at the right time. Almost all types of hamstring pulls and tears (except a complete hamstring rupture) can be properly treated with trusted therapies that are available for use at home. Complete ruptures usually require surgery. However, using these home therapies after surgery can help speed recovery, improve function, and increase range of motion in your hamstrings.

Step 1 - Reduce Pain & Swelling with a Cold Compress or Ice Pack

The 1st step for conservative treatment of your hamstring injury is to reduce swelling to "open up" the area for more blood flow. Anyone in the health-care business knows that your blood supplies the oxygen and much needed nutrients required for your hamstring to heal naturally. This is why doctors and surgeons recommend cold compression within the first 72 hours of an injury and following meniscus surgery.

Cold compression is recommended to reduce pain, swelling and tissue damage. Many doctors, surgeons and physical therapists consider cold compression to be the gold standard for treatment of inflammation and pain. On-going cold compression treatments can reduce, or even eliminate, the need for NSAIDs or other medications that can be harmful to your body.

Cold compression is known and trusted by most medical professionals. This is why for years doctors, trainers and other medical professionals have recommended RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) to treat the pain and swelling of fresh injuries, chronic pain, after any re-injury, and especially after surgery.

This is important because once blood vessels are blocked or damaged, they can no longer carry oxygenated blood through to tissue and so they begin to break down. Without cold compression, tissue break-down and damage continues as some tissue doesn't get the oxygen it needs to survive. By limiting the amount of damage done to your hamstring, you also limit the amount of healing that needs to occur. This is a very important step to heal hamstring injuries faster and with less pain! This is why you need to treat your hamstring injury, when you notice pain / swelling / inflammation, or directly after a re-injury. Applying a Cold Compress or Ice Pack right away will stop the damage immediately and unblock your blood vessels to let your body's natural blood flow in to start healing the tissue.

Use a Cold Compress or Ice Pack:

  • 24 to 72 hours after your initial injury or when you first notice pain and swelling in your hamstring to stop tissue damage, relieve pain, and decrease swelling.
  • After exercise, workouts or activity of any kind to prevent re-injury of your hamstring.
  • Before and after surgery during rehabilitation to control pre and post-surgery pain and swelling.
  • Anytime you feel your hamstring is tender, painful or you're having a flare-up of an old hamstring injury.
  • Anytime you have swelling, sharp throbbing pain or inflammation.
  • Any other situation where you need to draw the pain and inflammation out of your hamstring injury.

Step 2 - Improve Circulation & Prevent Re-Injury with Circulation Boost
Increase blood flow to speed up healing of your hamstring injury.

There are a lot of people that think their hamstring injury is gone after their swelling and inflammation are gone and their leg feels better. They also make the mistake of returning to regular activities too soon without proper time for healing. The truth is that healing takes time and after the swelling is gone your hamstring injury isn't even close to being fully healed.

After the inflammation in and around your hamstring has been reduced, providing extra blood flow and strengthening the tissue in your hamstring is recommended. Believe it or not, the best time for you to focus on avoiding re-injury and strengthening your weakened hamstring is when the swelling's gone and your injury's started to heal. It's vital that you don't go back to activities too soon because you might bring on a major set-back in your recovery...

  • Have you recently re-injured your hamstring by returning to your normal daily activities too quickly?
  • How many times in the past have you aggravated your hamstring injury just trying to perform basic tasks around your house?
  • Is your hamstring preventing you from work or activities you love to do?

If this sounds like you - You're not alone...

Most people we deal with tell us these scenarios have happened to them many times in the past. The real challenge is how to promote blood flow to your injured muscle without causing further injury. This goal is even more complicated by the fact that your hamstring takes on a lot of weight for your leg to support your knee.

Hamstring injuries, tendonitis, torn ligaments and overall leg, knee or hip pain can often occur at the same time - weakening not only your damaged hamstring, but also all of the soft tissue surrounding your hamstring.

What can you do to actually start healing your hamstring injury?

Increase blood flow to speed up healing of your hamstring injury.

The answer is simple. Your body can heal itself and it's the blood in your body that makes it all happen. Your blood is how everything that's good inside of you is transported directly to your injured hamstring. Your blood carries oxygen, nutrients and water right to the source of your injury and pain. Bringing proper blood flow to your injured hamstring is essential to healing.

Promoting blood flow around injured tissue to help the body heal itself is a concept that's been used for centuries. Oxygen and nutrients, carried in your own blood, are critical for the body to heal itself. Without proper blood flow, recovering from your hamstring injury will be delayed... Sometimes for a very long period of time.

Even though the concept is simple, improving blood flow to your hamstring can be difficult. Traditional methods require you to move your damaged hamstring in order to promote blood flow. This same motion that promotes blood flow can also make your pain and hamstring injury much worse (especially if you need to immobilize your leg at any point during your recovery process). Relying on movement alone to increase blood flow puts you in danger of re-injuring your hamstring.

So what do you do when you need to increase blood flow, but you can't move your hamstring without re-injuring your tissue?

Using Circulation Boost (Circulatory Boost), will help with your recovery and heal your hamstring more completely. TShellz Wraps® increases the amount of blood that flows naturally to your soft tissue to nourish your hamstring muscle, improving elasticity and speeding the healing process. This increased Circulation Boost to your damaged hamstring is greatly needed to complete your healing and avoid re-injury once and for all.

Increase blood flow to speed up healing of your hamstring injury and recovery process.
  • When treating a hamstring injury, an effective treatment will increase blood flow to the injury while the leg is immobile.
  • This increase in blood flow will help maximize the body's own capability to heal itself.

Who Should Use the Leg/Arm TShellz Wrap®

We recommend the use of a Leg/Arm TShellz Wrap®:

  • If you have injured your hamstring muscles or other soft tissue in your calf, knee or thigh, then the TShellz Wrap® will provide the all-important function of boosting blood circulation where it is needed most.
  • If you are dealing with conditions affecting your range of motion such as an impingement or even arthritis (no, it won't fix arthritis, but it can help with pain and help alleviate tight tissue).
  • If you have a chronic soft tissue knee/hamstring condition that has lasted for years- this device is intended to kick start the recovery process and help strengthen the surrounding and supporting tissues.
  • If you are still working with a hamstring strain or mild tear, the TShellz Wrap® will help relax tissue in the treatment area prior to work and after a day at the job.
  • If you are still trying to enjoy your favorite activities such as gardening, tennis, golf, etc - use the TShellz Wrap® prior to activity to help reduce risk of re-injuring or re-aggravating those targeted tissues.
  • If you are suffering from bursitis and want to treat a major source of it (inflammation and damage to tissue surrounding the bursa sac). Through trauma, overuse or degenerative changes, muscle and tendons surrounding the bursa sacs will tighten and constrict. When they do, they place pressure on the bursa, causing it to become irritated. Applying a TShellz Wrap® to the area will help relax tissue in the treatment area, taking pressure off the bursa.
  • If you are experiencing atrophy in your hamstrings or quadriceps and want to reduce the chance of re-injury - this is a perfect treatment to use on a regular basis.
  • If you have been to a clinic for some form of soft tissue treatment, massage or stretching and your PT or physician has recommended conservative treatments for home.
  • If you are experiencing tightness in your muscle(s) and want to reduce the chance of re-injury while stretching - this is a perfect treatment to use before stretching or activity, by enhancing blood flow and elongating soft tissue.
  • If you have injured your leg and need surgery, then you will find this is a powerful tool after surgery to help surgically repaired tissues recover for long-term health. (once the surgery wound has healed and your physician has given the ok - generally 6 weeks after surgery)

Increased Blood Circulation = Increased Healing Capability

TShellz Wraps® contain a unique Carbon Fiber Energy Pad which is flexible and will shape to conform to your body. This Energy Pad emits a uniform wave of perfectly safe energy over its entire surface. This energy is absorbed by soft tissue in the treatment area, opening blood vessels, resulting in an increase in blood flow. Increased blood circulation is what your body needs to accelerate the healing of soft tissue and this is why we recommend the TShellz Wrap®.

The Leg TShellz Wrap® is an FDA Registered Medical Device and is suitable for use in therapeutic clinics and FROM HOME. It is completely safe for people and patients to use for themselves.

The technology found in a TShellz Wrap® has been used for decades in the worlds of professional and amateur sports - a contributing factor as to why athletes seem to recover from injuries so quickly.

Have you ever wondered by an athlete can return to activity after 3 or 4 weeks following a tendon or muscle injury - while your average person takes much longer to return back to normal? The secret isn't really that much of a secret - it involves consistent treatments (meaning multiple times a day) using a treatment like the TShellz Wrap® to stimulate blood flow to the injured tissues. Most athletes have the luxury of using in-house facilities many times per day.

How many us can afford the time and money to visit a clinic multiple times a day? Very few indeed. This is how you can gain some of the advantages that athletes enjoy in their injury recovery - by using a device like the TShellz Wrap® two or three times a day on a consistent basis.

Consistent Treatments = Consistent And Long Term Improvement

What Else Makes the Leg TShellz Wrap® So Special?

We believe the TShellz Wrap® to be one of the most effective home treatments to increase localized blood flow to soft tissue in and around the treatment area.

We can promise that you will receive a product that is designed to be safe and does what it is supposed to do... reduce pain (as stated in "Therapeutic Heat and Cold", 4th edition. - Ed. Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., Williams, and Wilkin) temporarily increase length & flexibility of soft tissue (as stated in "Therapeutic Heat and Cold", 4th edition. - Ed. Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., Williams, and Wilkin) and aid your body in recovering from tendon, muscle and other soft tissue injuries via enhanced blood flow.

The unit plugs into a standard wall outlet to get its power. The nice thing about the power supply is that the same unit can be used in North America and overseas as well. It has the capability to operate between 110v and 230v.

The TShellz Wrap® has a special signal controller that can be set for 3 different power levels of application (3=High, 2=Medium, 1=Low). The cord is long enough that you can sit or lie comfortably and watch TV, read or surf the net while you're using it.

Treatments are max 30 minutes in duration and the device can be worn over clothing. This allows you to use the device at work, at home, or really anywhere you have access to an electrical outlet.

A TShellz Wrap® application is intended to produce the following results:

Enhance blood circulation and
increase the levels of oxygen within your blood.

This, in turn, improves function of the immune system which increases the body's ability to eliminate toxins and other waste by-products resulting from damaged tissue in the hamstring. This allows the body to more easily stimulate the self healing process.

Stimulate the production of collagen,
which is a building block for human tissue.

Many hamstring injuries are the result of trauma to a tendon or muscle, usually causing the tissue to tear. As a result of the tear, your body triggers a natural healing process resulting in pain, inflammation, and the creation of scar tissue, then eventually reinforcing that band-aid solution with flexible tissue (proliferation). Increased blood flow will make this process more quick and efficient in the majority of cases.

Sciatica Pain Pattern

It is generally accepted that heat will enhance the extensibility of soft tissue.

This is an important point. A pulled hamstring has the HIGHEST frequency of reinjury of any muscle in the body as it bears a huge load through most of our daily movement. A strained, partially torn or pulled hamstring is tight and range of motion in the joint is restricted, thus contributing to high risk of further injury. Even the most minor of activities can cause a recovering hamstring to strain, sprain, or even tear. Every time this happens, your recovery is delayed. This is why using the TShellz Wrap® not only now, but also into the future, is wise. The TShellz Wrap® warms tissue, and thereby increases it's elasticity...all without risk of causing further harm and greatly reducing your chances of re-injury.

It is also intended to provide relief to some who are dealing with nerve related issues.

TShellz Wraps® applied to muscles and soft tissue that surround the nerves should help them become more loose, as heat is known to increase the flexibility and extensibility of soft tissue. You may find this will alleviate tightness which may have led to nerve compression and the subsequent pain it produces.

Intended to reduce stiffness in joints.

Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage and meniscii degenerate. Over time, two bones in the joint rub together with little or no protection from cartilage. This leads to pain and inflammation in the joint as the space within the joint starts to decrease without the cushioning, and stiffness starts to become a bigger and bigger problem. The TShellz Wrap® is intended to generate warmth and an increase in blood flow - resulting in less stiffness and better range-of-motion.

Contribute to your overall well-being.

Increased blood flow should result in a stronger immune system and an ability for your body to recover from soft tissue injuries more quickly.

Believe me when I say this; words alone cannot accurately describe what the TShellz Wrap® can do for you. It truly is something you need to experience first-hand.

Regular treatments with a Leg TShellz Wrap® can reduce pain and stiffness from scar tissue and increase overall flexibility in your leg. Increased blood flow will whisk away damaged tissue, toxins, and any bacteria in your injured hamstring to promote more effective healing. Getting rid of toxins will allow all of the positive healing processes to start in your injury. Increasing blood flow will also increase the amount of oxygen that's being sent to your injured tissue AND boost your tissue's ability to absorb oxygen. (reference: 1)

Regular treatment with a TShellz Wraps® will ensure:

  • Your pain will be reduced.
  • Your injured hamstring will heal at an accelerated rate with reduced potential for re-injury.
  • Your hamstring will have a larger range of motion and increased extensibility of collagen tissue. (Chapter 9 of "Therapeutic Heat and Cold", 4th edition. (amazon.com link - Ed. Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., Williams, and Wilkin)

Increased Blood Flow = More Oxygen, More Nutrients and Less Toxins = Faster Healing

Use a Circulatory Boost Leg TShellz Wrap®:

  • After swelling and inflammation have been reduced with cold compression.
  • Before exercise or workouts to warm up your hamstring to prevent re-injury.
  • Before and after surgery during rehabilitation to warm up your hamstring before exercising or stretching.
  • Anytime you feel your hamstring has stiffened up, is tight and your mobility is reduced causing you more pain.
  • Anytime you have sore or aching tissue in your hamstring.
  • Any other situation where you need to increase blood flow to your hamstring to relax your soft tissue, relieve pain, prevent re-injury and enhance flexibility of your tissue.

Step 3 - Exercise At Home & Prevent Scar Tissue Build-Up
Stretching is needed for recovery from a hamstring injury

The final step in hamstring injury recovery is stretching - this is a critical step for complete recovery from your strained hamstring!

When your hamstring is injured, stretching plays a huge role in treating your injury with or without surgery... This is especially true if you're immobilizing your leg after surgery with a cast, brace or by using crutches. Long-term immobilization of your leg can lead to massive amounts of scar tissue that stiffens the entire area and causes your surrounding tissue to atrophy (waste away).

For many people stretching seems like a basic thing but you'd be surprised by how many people there are that don't understand the importance of stretching any hamstring injury, especially after surgery.

Each of your legs support an intense amount of weight everyday. When you suffer from a hamstring injury you're unable to support your own weight in the same way you used to. This can make simple tasks like walking or even standing extremely difficult for you. A full recovery from your hamstring injury depends on your commitment to stretching and strengthening exercises.

Physical therapists will manually manipulate your leg to increase flexibility of your hamstring.

Physical therapists prescribe gentle stretching of your hamstring before making the transition to crutches after surgery and as you recover from having to use immobilization tools like a brace. They don't prescribe this to annoy you - it's in fact the most important part of your hamstring recovery. You probably know someone that chose not to do any stretching - and they paid a high price for it. By not listening to their therapist (ie. not stretching), there is a huge chance of re-injurying your hamstring or even getting a more serious injury than your original hamstring injury.

Ask any physical therapist and they'll tell you the key to a successful recovery is commitment to at home exercise!

It may seem hard to believe but it's true... Stretching is the secret of healing your hamstring injury. Consistent stretching is one of the only solutions to break up scar tissue that forms in your hamstring muscle as it heals.

Stretching is amazing for your hamstring and will bring your overall hamstring injury recovery to a whole new level. Stretching with a Cold Compress or Ice Pack and Leg TShellz Wrap® is even better!

Scar tissue grows to protect your hamstring when it's injured.

Even when you're injured and in pain you need to keep moving to break up scar tissue that's forming around your hamstring. Moving when you're injured is hard. Since moving while injured can be painful - most people think it's better to stop moving, rest their body and hope that their hamstring will heal all on its' own. Even though rest is important to recovery too much rest during the recovery process will increase the amount of scar tissue on your hamstring.

During the healing process your body will fill in tears in your soft tissue with dense, brittle tissue called "scar tissue". The human body will use scar tissue as a temporary solution and will try to build the scar tissue as fast as possible to heal the area. Scar tissue can form fast to bind everything together in and around your injured hamstring, but working fast doesn't mean that the job's done right. When scar tissue forms it doesn't come together as neatly as regular (healthy) soft tissue would. Scar tissue fibers will lay down over top of the damage in your hamstring in a cluttered, messy and jumbled up way.

Imagine throwing a bunch of drinking straws in the air... Those straws will land in a random, unorganized way. It seems silly to think that those straws could land perfectly straight and all in the same direction.

This is how scar tissue works. The scar tissue that forms on your hamstring will be unorganized and won't line up properly with the healthy tissue surrounding your muscle. This scar tissue will also attach to everything in and around your hamstring, including the surrounding healthy tissue as well. This can result in a long-term fusing together of your tissue that stiffens up your entire leg, reducing your mobility and making your hamstring injury even more painful!

Scar tissue builds on the hamstring muscle as your strain heals. The build up causes pain and inflexibility making your muscle more prone to further injury.

This is why scar tissue is weak and only a temporary solution to heal your hamstring injury. Scar tissue is something that needs to be dealt with fast. If you try to get back into your regular daily activities with a mound of scar tissue on your hamstring you'll have a higher risk of re-injury. Scar tissue is just not built to withstand the pressures of regular activity.

If you have an injured hamstring with a lot of scar tissue and re-injure that tissue, even more scar tissue will grow to fill in those tears. If you keep falling into the dangerous cycle of re-injuring your hamstring without proper treatment you could end up with massive amounts of scar tissue on your hamstring. Your ability to move this muscle in a normal way will be impaired as the amount of scar tissue increases.

The only solution to truly repair your pulled hamstring muscle for good is to break up scar tissue and avoid re-injury.

The Key Points To Keep in Mind When Treating Your Hamstring Injury

Make Sure That Complete Healing is Your #1 Goal

leg T•Shellz Wrap x-ray back thigh

We all know that if the injury was healed, the pain would go away but what about the opposite situation? If the pain is gone, does that mean the injury is better? Unfortunately, this is not always true.

Too many people only focus on suppressing pain symptoms while providing less attention to the true healing aspects of the body. Experiencing less pain, while obviously a good short-term goal, does not equate to underlying healing. Scar tissue can remain for months after one gets to a point of being relatively pain-free. However, as long the weak and brittle scar tissue remains, you are susceptible to re-injury or re-aggravation. Certain motions or movements can cause the weaker tissue to easily tear - resulting in some reversal of the recovery up until that point.

This is why we recommend for people to continue with their doctor or therapist recommended exercises and to continue with mild treatments of the TShellz Wrap® for a period of time - to better ensure complete recovery.

Ongoing treatments to enhance circulation are intended to soothe, relax and promote healing of damaged soft tissue in the application area. T•Shellz treatment also results in the ability of soft tissue to extend further due to the effect of heat on soft tissue. The more extensible your tissues are, the less likely they are to strain or sprain.

Resting Will Help, But Only Temporarily

People tell us all the time, "I was told that if I stay off my feet for a few weeks, my pain will disappear for good."

The truth is, tendonitis pain is usually a culmination of numerous factors, such as repetitive stress, poor posture, acute injuries, and overcompensation issues resulting from other muscle and soft tissue ailments.

It may take weeks or months for these pain triggers to surface. When they , however, merely resting will solve the underlying issues. You need to utilize actions and options that actually treat the source of the pain and help reverse the damage that has been done.

Resting has a role to play, but it is only one small factor in a recovery plan.

Hamstring Injury Facts:

Hamstring Muscles cross both your hip and knee, and help extend (straighten) the hip or bend the knee.

A Hamstring injury is an injury to one of the three different hamstring muscles in the back of the thigh.

The three Hamstring muscles name are: Biceps Femoris, Semitendinousus, Semimembranosus muscles.

Continually using your Hamstring muscles while injured will lead to a worse injury; and yes, it is difficult to avoid using the Hamstring.

Most Hamstring injuries happen while playing sports, such as soccer or football.

Once you have suffered one Hamstring injury, there is a very good chance you will suffer another Hamstring injury.
